In the recent budget presented by the Chennai Corporation, R Priya, Mayor, Chennai, emphasised technology-based governance and announced online tax payments via QR code to help residents with property taxes. Additionally, the residents could also apply for building permits through the Namma Chennai app.
Vishu Mahajan, Deputy Commissioner, Revenue and Finance Department, said that more kiosks would be set up to make the process of paying taxes more convenient through online avenues. The residents will be able to pay taxes, renew trade licenses and check the status of building approvals via WhatsApp. Moreover, the new online tax payment system will also be utilised for Geographic Information System (GIS) and other spatial technologies.
There are over 1.2 lakh downloads of the Namma Chennai app. With the addition of more services, the app will have over two lakh subscribers. Further, the Namma Chennai app will create an application for officials to check the status of projects and details about all its departments. This will ensure officials follow up on projects and show attendance. Moreover, unresolved grievances will be flagged in the Namma Chennai app.
